  32. I would like to run the following idea of starting a top-notch
  33. ham radio club by the net community.

  35. Here is my idea of a ham radio club:
  36.  
  37.     - maximum of around 10 members.
  38.     - $50 to $75 / month membership. With 10 members that
  39.         amounts to a 'club income' of $6000 - $9000 a year.
  40.     - Nice and heafty sign up fee of, let's say, $300.
  41.  
  42. Now that I got your attention throwing around some big numbers,
  43. here is what that club would do:
  44.  
  45.     - Buy / rent some room somewhere.
  46.     - Every member would have a key to that room.
  47.     - This room would be filled with state-of-the-art
  48.       equipment:
  49.       1. REAL good and big antennas (theory: if the last
  50.          storm didn't blow them down, they were not high
  51.          enough). Like how about a 120 foot tower.
  52.       2. Nice low band rig with all the goodies, like
  53.          amplifier, filters, RTTY, AMTOR, ...
  54.       3. Satellite station with nice antennas.
  55.       4. VHF and UHF equipment which is `real cool.'
  56.       5. Packet radio related equipment.
  57.       6. Repeater
  58.       7. Computer
  59.       8. Telephone line, dial up facility.
  60.       9. Anything else you could dream of? Like
  61.         repair equipment: oscilloscope, spectrum
  62.         analyzer, generator for a field day, ..
  63.  
  64. Or to summarize: we would build the worlds best ham radio
  65. station.

  67. The basic idea is to `pull resources.' Instead of having
  68. 10 OK type of stations at home we would have one BIG/SUPER
  69. station somewhere at a location accessible to everyone.

  71. What do you think about this idea? In particular if you lived
  72. in the Chicago area would you be interested in starting such
  73. a station/club?

  75. One last word: when I was at Purdue I discussed that idea briefly
  76. with the Purdue ham radio club members (via their electronic mailing
  77. list). Some of the responses were negative to a degree which totally
  78. surprized me - one member wrote that if he knew what call sign that
  79. super station had, he would not even communicate with us.

  81. So, please no flames, and stuff like that. My basic idea is to pull
  82. resources to the highest possible degree - and not to look at a
  83. ham radio club as a monthly meeting opportunity and to additionally,
  84. may be, fund a repeater.
